What did I aim to do?
In my first experiment with writing with rope, I used acrylic paint. I had to constantly dip the rope back into the paint to be able to write with it. That's when the idea started playing in my head that it would be easier if the ink came out of the end of the rope automatically. Just like a ballpoint pen does. Having discovered that using ink works much better than paint, this isn't really necessary anymore, but I still found it an interesting idea to develop further.
Which steps did I take and/or methods did I use?
I bought a syringe and a small IV tube. I pulled a few small white pieces of rope out of the core, and then inserted the end of the tube into it. I wrapped a rubber band around the whole thing to hold everything together securely, and then I had a piece of rope into which I could 'inject' the ink. I used the same ink I had used for my previous experiment and easily filled the syringe with it. Next, I was able to run the ink through the tube. I quickly noticed that the ink didn't come out at the end of the rope, but rather in the middle. Because of this, my idea didn't work as well as I initially thought. To still be able to carry out the experiment, I decided to empty the entire syringe so that the rope would completely soak up the ink. I was able to write a little bit with this, but it was very difficult. Additionally, it was quite a messy experiment.
What did I find out/learn?
I realized that working with ink and rope is fun, but it can quickly get messy. And that this approach could work in theory, but you have to make sure the tube goes all the way through the rope so the ink comes out in the right place.
Which new questions about my material or process of experimentation do I have?
What would happen if I did manage to get the tube in the right place, and could I ensure I have more control over it?
What does this mean for next steps?
I have noticed that it's difficult to gain control over this. I still find writing with the rope a very interesting avenue to explore, but I think I want to keep things simpler than this experiment.
Which sources do I use to inform my next steps?
